Men explained the reasons for the increased risk of cardiac arrest
Cardiologist Ekaterina Paukova explained who has the highest risk of sudden cardiac arrest.
As reported by BAKU.WS, she shared this in an interview with "Lenta.ru".
According to the specialist, sudden cardiac arrest occurs due to dangerous heart rhythm disorders - such as ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. In these conditions, the heart begins to beat too quickly and loses its ability to pump blood effectively.
"Men face the risk of cardiac arrest more often than women. One of the reasons is their hormonal background - the male body produces significantly less estrogen than the female body. This hormone and its derivatives protect the heart and blood vessels from developing diseases," Paukova explained.
In addition, the doctor noted that high cholesterol, smoking, and alcohol abuse increase the likelihood of cardiac arrest. These factors, according to statistics, are also more common in men.
In men under 40 years of age, sudden cardiac arrest is usually associated with arrhythmias, while in older patients it's associated with unrecognized coronary heart disease. In this case, atherosclerotic plaques form inside the blood vessels, and if such a plaque ruptures, blood flow is disrupted, leading to myocardial infarction, which can result in instant cardiac arrest.
To detect cardiovascular diseases in a timely manner, the cardiologist recommended regularly getting an ECG, checking cholesterol and blood glucose levels, and measuring lipoprotein(a) at least once in a lifetime. Starting from age 18, blood pressure should be monitored at least once a year. If the readings exceed 135/85 mm Hg, it is necessary to consult a cardiologist for further examination.
