Doctor warned about the hidden danger of tangerine peel
To preserve the attractive appearance of mandarin oranges and other citrus fruits, they are often treated with chemicals, which in excess can be harmful to health.
As reported by BAKU.WS, dietitian Jenny Chishe explained this in an interview with Daily Mirror.
According to the specialist, to prevent the growth of mold and fungi, citrus peels are often covered with compounds of imazalil and thiabendazole. These substances are used to protect plants from fungal diseases and help extend the freshness of fruits and vegetables during storage.
The expert noted that imazalil and thiabendazole can affect human liver and endocrine system. Other chemicals, such as fludioxonil and pyrimethanil, can cause skin irritation, as well as metabolic and neurological disorders.
According to the dietitian, a small amount of residual substances does not pose a danger, however, their accumulation can lead to unwanted consequences. Consuming zest or dishes prepared with its addition is especially dangerous.
To reduce risks, Chishe recommended thoroughly washing citrus fruits before consumption, and when using the peel in cooking - additionally cleaning it with soap and a brush.
