Doctor talks about diseases that cause craving for salty food
Constant craving for salty food is often associated with the habit of consuming such products, but it may also indicate disorders in the body.
As reported by BAKU.WS, Professor Stanislav Ionov discussed this in a conversation with "Lenta.ru".
The doctor indicated that salt is necessary for the body for the normal functioning of the central nervous system, however, its excess can provoke the development of metabolic disorders, such as urolithiasis and cholelithiasis, as well as diabetes mellitus. If increased salt consumption is only associated with habit, changing it is usually not difficult, but a constant desire for salty foods may indicate disturbances in the water-electrolyte balance, he added.
"Normally, the pH of the body's internal environment is 7.2-7.4. When the acid-base balance shifts towards the alkaline side, the need for salt increases. The desire for salty food can also be a sign of endocrine disorders or sodium chloride (NaCl) deficiency in the blood. Lack of sodium can lead to damage to the central nervous system, reduced reflex activity, lethargy, apathy, and constant drowsiness," warned Ionov.
The expert added that these pathologies often have a hereditary nature. Their presence may be indicated by a deviation of pH from the norm, so in such cases, it is recommended to undergo an examination by an endocrinologist, concluded the interlocutor of "Lenta.ru".
