Insurance ≠ Compensation: Russian Foreign Ministry Substitutes Concepts

The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a lengthy statement regarding insurance payments in connection with the AZAL aircraft disaster on December 25, 2024. The text, written in a characteristically irritated tone, contains both figures and strong wording.

"The Russian insurance company 'AlfaInsurance' has been making insurance payments since February 2025 in connection with the crash of the Azerbaijan Airlines aircraft (Baku - Grozny flight). The Azerbaijani airline has been paid insurance compensation for the aircraft in the amount of the full insurance value - 1.003 billion rubles (more than 12 million dollars). Claims related to injuries and deaths of 46 out of 62 passengers on the flight have been fully settled... To date, insurance payments have been made to injured passengers and relatives of the deceased for a total amount of 358.4 million rubles (more than 4 million dollars)," the statement says.

But the main point here is not about the figures. After listing the payments, the statement immediately makes accusations: "Attempts by a number of media outlets and bloggers to misinform the public on this sensitive issue leave no doubt about the destructive intentions and complete lack of moral guidelines of their authors and those behind them." And finally, the Russian Foreign Ministry notes: "We urge not to succumb to obvious speculation and provocations... We again recommend exercising vigilance, maintaining digital hygiene, and focusing only on official information and trusting verified sources," the material states.
