President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev approved changes to the laws regulating military service in the country.

As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to President.az, the approved amendments affect the laws "On Approval of the Regulation on Military Service" and "On Military Duty and Military Service".

The most significant change was the doubling of the term of active military service for graduates of specialized military educational institutions. While previously all warrant officers and midshipmen served a mandatory 5-year term, now graduates of specialized military educational institutions in Azerbaijan or similar foreign institutions will serve for 10 years.

The legislative changes also affected the procedure for admission to military service. The previously used wording "conscripts under 40 years of age" was replaced with a more specific one: "warrant officers and midshipmen in reserve who have not reached the age limit for military service, as well as privates, sailors and sergeants in reserve up to 40 years of age".

Significant changes have also been made to the military reserve system. Now the age limits for warrant officers and midshipmen in the reserve are categorized separately:

- for the first-degree reserve - up to 35 years;

- for the second-degree reserve - up to 45 years;

- for the third-degree reserve - up to 55 years.

The rules for calling up reservists for military training have also been revised. According to the new provisions, first-degree reservists can be called up for training up to ten times, with each period lasting up to one month. For reservists transferred to the reserve of the relevant executive authorities, up to five call-ups for training are provided, with each period lasting up to two months.
