When in May-June 1993 the country faced the threat of civil war and loss of independence, the Azerbaijani people demanded that Heydar Aliyev be brought to power. On June 15, 1993, he was elected Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan. This date has gone down in history as the Day of National Salvation.
