Despite years of warnings from Azerbaijan about declining water levels in the Caspian Sea, today the consequences of this problem are becoming increasingly evident.

As BAKU.WS reports, this was stated to Report by the President's Representative on Climate Issues, Mukhtar Babayev.

According to him, the falling water level in the Caspian Sea will cause serious damage to agriculture, urban infrastructure, ports, and tourism in the future.

"Azerbaijan is not raising the issue of the Caspian Sea's condition for the first time. The declining water level will inevitably create difficulties for the Caspian littoral states, and we have been talking about this for many years. Today, the consequences are becoming visible: for example, in the area of the Seaside Boulevard, the sea has noticeably become shallow. Over time, this will lead to the relocation of people from such places. Biodiversity is suffering, living organisms are dying. These are serious and severe consequences - and this is just the visible part of the problem. Imagine how many hidden threats remain beyond our perception," noted M. Babayev.

He emphasized that the key reason for the declining water level is the reduction in river flow.

"In recent years, the water level in the Volga has dropped dramatically. The decline is also observed in other rivers - the Ural, Terek, Samur, and Kura. The absence of interstate agreements on the use of water resources also accelerates the decline of the Caspian Sea level. Added to this is the construction of large reservoirs and intensive use of water in agriculture," added M. Babayev.

The President's Representative also noted the role of climate change, calling it the main factor in this problem.
