Zelensky: Ready to support holding elections during martial law
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky declared readiness to support elections during martial law, provided that security is ensured and necessary legislative changes are adopted.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to RBC-Ukraine, he announced this at a meeting with journalists.
According to Zelensky, the corresponding signal came from the United States, however, Kyiv should not demonstrate weakness or give grounds for manipulation amid the absence of elections: "And therefore I am certainly in favor of elections. The most important thing is that they are conducted legitimately."
He noted that international partners can assist in ensuring safe conditions for voting.
"I asked the people's deputies to prepare legislative changes on the possibility of holding elections during martial law," he said.
Zelensky emphasized that ending the war and maintaining Ukraine's strong position remain key priorities, however, the issue of elections requires joint elaboration.
"There are two important things: security and legislation. My request to both Ukraine's partners and the Ukrainian parliament is to show how both of these things can be worked out," he noted.
