The epidemic is spreading rapidly! In this country, the situation is becoming increasingly serious
At the end of September, an epidemic of Rift Valley fever began in Senegal, and the situation is worsening. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health, 312 out of 381 identified cases have recovered.
The ministry's statement reports that 29 out of 381 cases resulted in deaths. The death toll was announced as 25 on October 23.
Rift Valley fever was first detected on September 21 in the Saint-Louis area and quickly spread among the local population engaged in livestock farming.
The virus, named after the Great Rift Valley in eastern Africa, was first identified among livestock in the Rift area, which extends to Kenya, in 1931.
Rift Valley fever can be transmitted to humans through direct contact with blood, tissues, or fluids of infected animals, primarily through mosquitoes. Although the disease in most cases manifests with flu-like symptoms such as high fever, weakness, and muscle pain, in some cases it can lead to serious complications such as liver failure, eye inflammation, or brain inflammation.
Rift Valley fever periodically reappears in various points across the African continent, especially during rainy seasons when mosquito populations increase.
Communities engaged in livestock farming and agricultural areas are among the most high-risk places for the virus to spread. Rift Valley fever, being a zoonotic disease, is transmitted from animals to humans but does not spread from human to human.
