Beaches around the world may be under threat of disappearing

Beaches around the world are under threat of disappearing due to sand erosion. This is reported by the Financial Times (FT).
As the authors of the publication note, sand erosion occurs due to coastline erosion, which makes the process difficult to stop. In particular, in the town of Rodanthe in North Carolina, USA, 11 houses have collapsed into the ocean since 2020 due to shore erosion. Restoring the coastline will require $40 million, but the town does not have such funds. Also, Barcelona's beaches in Spain lose about 30 thousand cubic meters of sand per year. As a result, some beaches may completely disappear.
"From Miami to Barcelona and Australia's Gold Coast, authorities are trying to figure out how to save coastlines from erosion in the coming years. Some of the erosion occurs for natural reasons," the article states.
The authors emphasize that the situation is exacerbated by storms, strong tides, as well as rising sea levels due to anthropogenic global warming, which leads to glacier melting.
It is noted that sand is being imported to restore the coastline. It serves as protection against flooding. But the price of sand is rising, and market supply is decreasing due to increased demand in construction and other industries.
