Anomalous snowfalls hit Moscow
The snowfalls that hit Moscow turned out to be anomalous by the capital's standards. The cause of the record precipitation was a southern cyclone that brought a large amount of moisture to the megacity.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to RIA Novosti, the leading meteorologist of the Hydrometeorological Center, Marina Makarova, told the agency about this. According to her, southern cyclones are usually accompanied by heavy precipitation even in winter.
The weather forecaster explained that the cyclone that covered Moscow formed over the Mediterranean Sea, where a large amount of moisture is concentrated. In addition, the Black Sea is not bound by ice, which causes continued intense evaporation. As a result, warm and humid air in the cyclone zone collides with cold air masses coming from the north.
Another factor that intensified the snowfalls was the slow movement of cyclones over the capital region this year, which prolongs their impact.
According to meteorologists' forecasts, heavy snowfalls in Moscow may end on Thursday, January 15. After this, a cold spell is expected in the capital.
