After a magnitude 7.4 earthquake off the coast of Mexico, a tsunami threat was announced
A magnitude 7.4 earthquake has been recorded in the city of Puerto Madero in southern Mexico.
This was reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The epicenter was located near the city of Puerto Madero in the state of Chiapas, close to the border with Guatemala. The hypocenter was at a depth of 10 km.
The shallow depth may have intensified the shaking on the surface. The tremors were also felt in neighboring Guatemala. According to eyewitnesses, buildings were swaying in the country's capital.
Following the seismic event, a tsunami warning was issued for nearby sections of the Pacific coast. Dangerous waves could have occurred within a radius of up to 300 km from the epicenter. Sirens sounded in the streets. Residents of coastal areas were warned of potential danger.
In the first minutes, no reports of deaths, injuries, or serious damage were received. Authorities continue to assess the consequences of the tremors.
