Three unusual signs that your heart is sick
Cardiovascular diseases claim about 18 million lives worldwide each year. However, their symptoms are not always obvious. Scientists from the American Academy of Dermatology have identified three unusual signs that appear on the legs and may signal heart problems.
Osler's Nodes
These are painful nodules that can appear on the toes and fingers. They last from several hours to a couple of days and indicate the presence of an infection related to the heart. Although they resolve on their own, they require treatment - often with antibiotics or even surgery.
Leg Swelling
Swollen feet, ankles, or legs in general may indicate heart failure. Such swelling is the result of improper heart function and fluid accumulation in the body.
Blue Toes
A change in skin color to blue or purple, especially in warm weather, may indicate impaired blood flow and lack of oxygen in the tissues. This condition is called cyanosis and can lead to death of skin and soft tissues.
Medical professionals emphasize: it's important to pay attention even to such symptoms that seemingly aren't related to the heart. Early detection is the key to timely treatment.
