Researchers from the Vienna Medical University have found that lavender extracts demonstrate effectiveness comparable to traditional antidepressants in combating anxiety disorders and depression. This was reported to "Gazeta.Ru" by Evgeny Taratukhin, Associate Professor of the Department of Hospital Therapy named after Academician P.E. Lukomsky at the Institute of Clinical Medicine of Pirogov University.

"Lavender, specifically its extracts, has shown effectiveness in fighting depression in numerous studies. Lavender essential oil, for example, is used in the form of the drug Silexan in Germany. These are 80 mg capsules which, in a randomized study in patients with anxiety and generalized anxiety disorder, showed significantly higher effectiveness than placebo, comparable to traditionally prescribed medications. It is also used in the form of lozenges. Inhalation of lavender essential oil in studies proved to be the most effective method of application compared to massage or oral administration. Obviously, during inhalation, the smell itself matters along with the biologically active substances contained in the oil," explained the specialist.

An important advantage of lavender essential oil is the absence of contraindications, unlike the long list of side effects characteristic of antidepressants. However, the expert warns that when using natural extracts, it is necessary to remember about possible allergic reactions. Despite the general safety of essential oils, low-quality products may contain protein impurities that can cause allergies.

Taratukhin also emphasized the importance of distinguishing between real lavender extract and synthetic fragrances used in perfumery and household air fresheners.

"There may be no natural extract there. Then the effect will be limited to just the smell. It can also have a positive effect, but still, the smell is connected with the experience of a specific person. If you personally don't like the smell of lavender and it's not comfortable for you, don't force yourself to smell it for the 'magical' anxiety-reducing effect. Only real lavender, the so-called English lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, is used in clinical studies. It is its extracts that have shown effectiveness, but they can be of different quality and different purity. You should not use low-quality essential oil internally," the doctor explained.
