It has become known why years "fly by" faster with age

In childhood, summer seemed endless, and waiting for a birthday felt like an eternity. Today, we are surprised at how quickly a year has flown by. Scientists claim: the perception of time really changes with age.
"How we experience days, weeks, and years depends on our experience and from which perspective we look at time - from the present or from the past," explains Cindy Lustig, professor of psychology at the University of Michigan.
The reason lies in the ratio of lived to current time. For an eight-year-old child, a week is a significant part of life, whereas for an 80-year-old, it's just a fleeting moment. Additionally, with age, life becomes more predictable, days more monotonous, and the brain stops noticing the boundaries between weeks and months.
According to Professor Adrian Bejan from Duke University, our brain "records" changes. Children have many new events - school, friends, games - and each of them leaves a vivid impression. That's why time seems slow. Adults can experience a similar effect, for example, during a vacation filled with new impressions.
There's also a visual aspect: in youth, we receive much more new visual information, which also "stretches" time. Over time, the brain gets used to its surroundings and records less new information - hence the feeling that days are racing by.
Is it possible to slow down this race? Yes - by introducing as much novelty into life as possible: travel, new hobbies, acquaintances. Everything that goes beyond the usual helps us fill our memory with events and slow down the subjective flow of time.
