Two and a half hours of physical activity per week reduces the risk of prediabetes progressing to type 2 diabetes. This conclusion was reached by scientists from Colombia. The research results are published in the journal Cardiovascular Diabetology – Endocrinology Reports.

The study involved 130 adults who completed a comprehensive cardiovascular risk reduction program at a referral center in Cali between 2019 and 2023. At the time of enrollment in the program, participants' average glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) blood level was 5.9%. This value indicated prediabetes - a "borderline" blood sugar concentration (with a normal range of 4.8–5.9%).

Participants with excess body weight were given a goal to lose 7% of their weight. Dietary recommendations were selected individually, and physical activity levels were measured using the IPAQ (International Physical Activity Questionnaire). This tool analyzes the duration and structure of everyday physical activities, including walking, training, and work activities.

One year after the start of observation, prediabetes persisted in 64.6% of participants, 21.5% returned to normal, and 13.8% developed type 2 diabetes. The scientists calculated that those who devoted more than 150 minutes per week to physical activity increased their chances of normalizing blood sugar levels by 4.15 times.

"Unhealthy lifestyle remains the main modifiable risk factor for both prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. At the same time, a rational diet and active lifestyle can effectively prevent the development of chronic metabolic disorders," the researchers concluded.
