Doctor identified differences between a common cold and a more dangerous illness
Russian therapist, Candidate of Medical Sciences Oksana Serebryakova explained what symptoms can help distinguish between a common cold and pneumonia, and why it's important not to miss a dangerous disease.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to "Lenta.ru", the doctor explained that a cold typically develops gradually. First, a runny nose and sore throat appear, then dry cough, general weakness, and a body temperature increase to about 38°C join in. Usually, symptoms peak during the first two to three days, and after five to seven days, the condition noticeably improves.
Unlike acute respiratory viral infections, pneumonia begins abruptly and progresses much more severely. According to Serebryakova, the temperature often exceeds 39°C, the cough becomes wet with purulent sputum, shortness of breath appears even at rest, there is chest pain when breathing, and pronounced intoxication - chills, sweating, severe weakness.
The doctor also noted that in elderly and weakened patients, pneumonia may present atypically: without high fever, but with the appearance of shortness of breath or confusion. This condition is called "masked" pneumonia and requires special attention from medical professionals.
The specialist emphasized that untimely treatment of pneumonia significantly increases the risk of severe complications, including pleurisy, lung abscess, respiratory failure, and even the development of sepsis.
