Doctor explained who should avoid eating persimmon
Persimmon can be dangerous for people with digestive disorders, diabetes, or a tendency to constipation, nutritionist Ekaterina Guzman told "Gazeta.Ru". According to her, tannins and high sugar content are to blame.
"Unripe persimmon contains many tannins (especially astringent varieties, such as "korolek"), which can cause constipation, especially in people who already have intestinal motility problems. To avoid this, choose ripe persimmon or freeze it to reduce tannin content. With excessive consumption combined with reduced stomach motility (for example, after stomach surgery or with diabetic gastropathy), phytobezoars may form – dense lumps of undigested fibers. Phytobezoars can cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and even intestinal obstruction. People at risk of bezoar formation are recommended to consume persimmon in moderate amounts and after meals," said Guzman.
She also recommended that people with diabetes should not overeat persimmon, as the fruit contains a lot of sugar - approximately 16 g per 100 g of product.
"The fruit is quite sweet, so people with diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance should limit the quantity and account for it in their diet. It's important to monitor blood sugar levels after consuming persimmon and consult with a doctor. Allergies to persimmon are rare but possible, especially in people who are allergic to other fruits or berries," added Guzman.
