Dorakh Marema: The Role of Azerbaijan Goes Far Beyond Simply Hosting Events
"Azerbaijan's hosting of major international platforms such as COP29 demonstrates its aspiration to occupy a more significant place in the climate and sustainable development agenda. From a practical standpoint, organizing such events yields two key outcomes: growth in international visibility and simultaneously increased domestic pressure to implement policies consistent with the commitments made."
As reported by BAKU.WS, this was stated by Dorah Marema, President of the international organization GenderCC - "Women for Climate Justice," who is participating in WUF13.
According to her, in a broader perspective, Azerbaijan is going through an interesting transitional phase:
"As a country historically dependent on fossil fuels, it faces a structural challenge common to many energy-exporting states: how to diversify without disrupting economic stability. In this context, the role of a leader in climate diplomacy holds both strategic and reputational significance. However, the true measure of leadership is the extent to which these commitments are consistently transformed into emissions reductions, enhanced urban resilience, and investments in clean infrastructure.
As for green energy, its role has already ceased to be optional or symbolic - it has become one of the main pillars of energy security. Solar and wind energy, as well as grid modernization, are not only a climate tool but also a means of long-term energy price stability and reduced vulnerability to external shocks."
Dorah Marema also emphasized that the main challenge lies in integration:
"Green energy alone is not sufficient if it is not combined with urban planning, transport systems, housing standards, and disaster risk management. Successful countries are those that perceive green energy not as a separate 'environmental policy' but as a framework for economic and urban development.
In this sense, Azerbaijan's role is not limited to merely hosting an event - it depends to a far greater extent on its ability to demonstrate a reliable transition model, especially as a country balancing the legacy of fossil fuels with ambitions in the field of green energy..."
