Defense against drones and laser weapons: Azerbaijan transforms Soviet BMP-1s into "smart hunters"

In a new episode of the "Military Chronicle" segment on Baku TV, they reported on the large-scale modernization of armored vehicles in the Azerbaijani army. The focus is on upgrading BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles remaining from the Soviet era and equipping them with advanced turret combat modules featuring the TOLGA anti-drone system.

As reported by BAKU.WS, the main goal of the project is to adapt the outdated BMP-1 platforms to the conditions of modern standoff warfare, significantly increase crew survivability on the battlefield, and create a reliable shield against FPV drones, loitering munitions (kamikaze drones), unmanned aerial vehicles, and low-flying aerial targets.

The modernized vehicles receive an entire suite of high-tech weaponry: radars with AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array), optoelectronic surveillance systems, electronic warfare systems ("jammers"), laser weapons, automatic cannons of various calibers, and ENFAL-17 missile systems.

It was particularly emphasized during the broadcast that the new remotely operated turret allows the crew to remain constantly protected inside the armored hull. All control and battlefield monitoring are carried out through external cameras and internal monitors, which dramatically enhances the safety of personnel.

In addition, the project envisages a co-production model. This will make it possible to localize the manufacturing of a number of TOLGA system components directly in Azerbaijan, establish a domestic base for technical maintenance, and lay the foundation for subsequent vehicle modifications. The implementation of this program not only strengthens the strategic alliance between Baku and Ankara but also serves as an example of highly effective and cost-efficient military-technical cooperation.
