Foreign words under control: AI checked 14 TV channels of Azerbaijan
A meeting on "Monitoring the preservation of the purity of the Azerbaijani language in television broadcasting" was held at the Audiovisual Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan with program directors and chief editors of television channels.
As reported by the Council, monitoring of 14 television channels was carried out using an artificial intelligence-based program.
The meeting discussed statistical data for December 2025 based on the results of monitoring conducted by the Audiovisual Council regarding the use of foreign words in television broadcasting. In the last month of the previous year, the broadcasting of 14 nationwide terrestrial and satellite TV channels was analyzed using artificial intelligence-based software. This analysis excluded feature films, TV series, theatrical performances and other artistic works, as well as speeches by foreign citizens.
Following the initial observations, the frequency of use of the most common foreign words was checked. Then, this list of words was submitted to the Institute of Linguistics of ANAS with a request to determine whether they were truly foreign and if they had equivalents in the Azerbaijani language. According to the official conclusion of the Institute of Linguistics, 33 words from the submitted list were recognized as foreign, while having corresponding equivalents in the Azerbaijani language. After this, the monitoring results were refined and updated.
33 foreign words that have equivalents in the Azerbaijani language were used a total of 1366 times
According to the overall results of the monitoring, in December, 33 foreign words that have equivalents in the Azerbaijani language were used by presenters of 14 television channels a total of 1366 times.
At the meeting, it was emphasized that monitoring activities will be ongoing, and broadcasters were recommended to take their results with the utmost seriousness. Broadcasters were instructed on the importance of strengthening editorial control in this direction. It was also noted that if subsequent monitoring does not show a decrease in the trend of unjustified use of foreign words that have equivalents in the Azerbaijani language, administrative penalties will be applied in accordance with the legislation.
