After a person quits smoking, positive changes gradually begin to occur in the body.

This is reported by BAKU.WS citing Dr. Ana Perez Ballesta.

According to the specialist, just 20 minutes after the last cigarette, a person's heart rate normalizes. As a result, the heart begins to work with less strain.

"After 24 hours, the level of carbon monoxide in the blood decreases by half, oxygen levels increase, and the risk of heart attack decreases," explained the doctor.

After two days, the sense of smell and taste become sharper. The specialist added that after several weeks, lung function improves by 10 percent.

According to Ballesta, in the long term, a person's risk of developing several types of cancer and stroke significantly decreases.
