An unusual love story that began on the internet turned into an international scandal in the Pakistani city of Karachi. 33-year-old US citizen Oniya Andrew Robinson flew to Pakistan in October 2024 intending to tie her life with 19-year-old Nidal Ahmed Memon, whom she met online.
However, the romantic story took an unexpected turn when the groom, upon meeting the bride, informed her of his family's categorical opposition to the marriage. After the rejection, the desperate American didn't leave the city but began demonstratively keeping watch near the would-be groom's house, who, along with his family, hastily changed their residence.
The situation escalated after Robinson's visa expired. Instead of returning home, the woman began posting video messages on social media, demanding compensation of $100,000 from Pakistani authorities. Her eccentric behavior attracted media attention.
Despite being offered repatriation assistance, including payment for a return ticket, Robinson refused to leave Pakistan. She continued to insist that she had already married Memon over the internet and was planning to move to Dubai, where she allegedly was expecting their child.
The situation was clarified by a person who identified himself as Robinson's son, informing journalists that his mother suffers from bipolar disorder.
