Wikipedia editors have rebelled against AI
World 94

Wikimedia Foundation (a non-profit organization that maintains and develops the Wikipedia encyclopedia - ed.) just two days after - on June 4 - starting to use AI to generate short summaries of Wikipedia articles announced the suspension of the experiment.

As reported by BAKU.WS, this was announced by 404 Media.

According to a Wikimedia Foundation representative, the experiment started on June 2 and was aimed at improving the accessibility of complex Wikipedia articles for readers with different levels of preparation. For this purpose, the Aya model from Cohere was used. The goal was to assess interest in such a feature and develop moderation systems that would ensure that humans remain key in the decision-making process about content. However, it had to be stopped due to complaints from article editors.

"We often receive diverse feedback from volunteers and take it into account in our decisions, sometimes changing course," explained the Wikimedia Foundation representative. "We welcome such thoughtful feedback - this is what continues to make Wikipedia a platform of collective human knowledge."

He also acknowledged that the organizers "should have better presented this idea and started a discussion" with the community on VPT (Village Pump Technical - Wikipedia's technical forum) several months ago. The Wikimedia Foundation representative also noted that as the ways of using the internet change, they are looking for new approaches to educate future generations, seeking to experiment "in safe ways appropriate for readers and the community."
