The European Union approved a loan to Ukraine of 90 billion euros
The European Union has signed a document granting Ukraine a loan of 90 billion euros.
As reported by BAKU.WS, the head of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola shared a corresponding post on the social network X.
"Just signed the 90 billion euro loan to support Ukraine on behalf of the European Parliament," Metsola noted.
She specified that such a loan is necessary for:
- supporting the functioning of vital public services;
- maintaining Ukraine's defense capability;
- protecting common security and freedom;
- achieving a real and lasting peace;
- securing Ukraine's future in Europe.
It is worth noting that the EU has thus approved two of the three main documents required to provide Ukraine with the loan. However, another document, which provides for changes to the EU's long-term budget, is being blocked by Hungary.
As a reminder, at the EU summit on December 18-19, 2025, the bloc's leaders agreed to allocate a loan of 90 billion euros to Ukraine for 2026-2027.
This decision became an alternative "Plan B," as the main option of a reparation loan secured by frozen Russian assets was not supported by Belgium due to concerns about its own budget and pressure on the Euroclear depository.
The new loan is based on joint EU borrowing backed by budgetary commitments of member states, although Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic refused to participate in this initiative.
The loan is expected to take effect on February 27. The funds may be allocated in the second half of March.
