Scientists calculated the date of possible asteroid collision with the Moon
Asteroid YR4, according to scientists from Johns Hopkins University, may collide with the Moon on December 22, 2032.
As BAKU.WS reports, this is according to Daily Mail citing the results of observations from the James Webb Space Telescope.
Dr. Andrew Rivkin noted that "currently the probability of collision is about 4%, however it may increase to 30% if future observations confirm current calculations." Specialists estimate that the celestial body with a diameter of approximately 67 meters could create a crater up to a kilometer wide on the lunar surface, and fragments scattered after the impact could theoretically reach Earth.
At present, the asteroid is inaccessible for ground-based observations. Scientists expect to detect it again using the James Webb telescope in February 2026, after which the object will disappear from view again until 2028. Rivkin emphasized that researchers don't have much time left to refine the orbit and accurately analyze possible risks during the approach.
