Media: Mojtaba Khamenei suffered severe facial burns
Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, wounded in an Israeli strike on his residence in Tehran on February 28, sustained severe facial burns that impair his speech. He will require plastic surgery.
This was reported by The New York Times, citing senior Iranian officials.
According to the newspaper, since late February Mojtaba Khamenei has undergone three surgeries on one leg. He may, as the publication notes, need a prosthesis. He also recently underwent surgery on his arm. Despite his severe injuries, the Supreme Leader remains mentally sharp and active, NYT writes.
According to NYT's sources, Mojtaba Khamenei is not recording audio or video addresses because he "does not want to appear vulnerable or weak." Since taking office on March 8, the Supreme Leader has issued several written statements that were distributed through the media.
