Three Azerbaijanis detained in connection with the case of a vessel sinking off Northern Cyprus
Three citizens of Azerbaijan have been detained as part of the investigation into the sinking of a vessel off the coast of Girne (Kyrenia) in Northern Cyprus, which killed eight people.
As Report learned, among the detained are Valeh Gumbatov, a resident of Palchygoba village in the Khachmaz district, and Rashad Ibragimov, a native of the Terter district who lives in Baku. The third detainee is Gadir Guliyev, a native of the Shabran district.
The disaster occurred on Sunday, August 30. The high-speed passenger vessel Filo Jet was operating a route between the port of Girne in Northern Cyprus and the Turkish city of Mersin.
Shortly after leaving the port, the vessel began taking on water at the bow. The crew attempted to return to port, but on the way back, Filo Jet capsized and sank. As a result, eight people died, another 20 are listed as missing, while rescuers managed to evacuate 241 passengers.
