SOCAR Green: Battery Energy Storage Systems Will Be Integrated into Azerbaijan's Export Energy Corridors
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) will become a key component of Azerbaijan's energy export corridors.
As Report informs, this was stated by Elchin Targuluyev, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer of SOCAR Green, at the webinar "Development of Infrastructure, Electromobility, and Renewable Energy Storage Solutions in Azerbaijan."
"The most common and widely known application of BESS is ensuring grid stability. This system is capable of maintaining grid frequency, performing reserve capacity functions, regulating voltage, providing black-start capability, and other tasks. At the same time, it can bring significant benefits to energy project developers. For example, for solar power producers, it enables time-shifting of generation.
Currently, peak generation occurs in the middle of the day, while the highest demand for electricity is observed closer to the evening hours. Thanks to storage systems, we can redistribute the generated energy to periods of increased consumption. In addition, this reduces the need for capacity curtailment. As the share of renewable energy sources increases, grid operators will have to resort to generation curtailment," noted E. Targuluyev.
In his opinion, battery systems can help developers solve this problem: instead of forced generation reduction, they can store energy and feed it back into the grid during periods of lower generation: "And finally, what is gaining particular importance in the near term is export corridors. Numerous energy export corridors will be established in Azerbaijan, and battery storage systems will become their most essential component."
