Israeli Air Force Will Not Be Able to Destroy Iran's Nuclear Facility in Fordow

As reported by The National Interest, the Israeli Air Force has encountered a serious obstacle in a potential confrontation with Iran. The GBU-28 bombs, considered among the most powerful in Israel's arsenal, have proven insufficiently effective for destroying the underground nuclear facility near the Iranian city of Fordow.

The American GBU-28 bomb weighing 2.3 tons, adopted in 1991, was previously successfully used by the US Air Force to strike underground facilities during the Iraq campaign. The laser-guided munition is equipped with a delayed-action fuse, which allows for detonations at depth. The technical characteristics are impressive: the bomb can penetrate 5 meters of concrete or 50 meters of soil.

"Although the GBU-28 is one of Israel's most powerful weapons and one of America's best bunker-busting tools, this system simply cannot penetrate to the depth of the Fordow facility," the publication emphasizes.

According to the author of the article, the limited capabilities of the Israeli Air Force may push Washington to consider options for direct intervention. In particular, the US has more powerful GBU-57 bombs capable of penetrating up to 19 meters of reinforced concrete.
