Simple drink unexpectedly linked to increased cancer risk
Regular consumption of pure fruit and vegetable juices may be associated with an increased risk of developing breast cancer - scientists came to this conclusion after analyzing data from a large prospective study involving more than 86 thousand women.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, researchers monitored the health of participants for approximately 10 years and recorded 2644 new cases of breast cancer. The analysis showed that women who consumed fruit or vegetable juices in amounts up to one glass per day had an average 13% higher risk of disease compared to those who completely avoided such beverages.
Meanwhile, sugary carbonated drinks, as well as beverages with artificial sweeteners, did not demonstrate a statistically significant connection with the risk of developing breast cancer.
Additional analysis revealed that replacing one daily serving of juice with a drink containing artificial sweetener was associated with approximately a 10 percent reduction in disease risk.
The authors emphasize that the data obtained reflect only a statistical relationship, not proving a direct cause-and-effect dependency, and note the need for further research to clarify possible biological mechanisms of this effect.
