Named the unexpected danger of consuming cold drinks

Even ordinary iced tea or lemonade can unexpectedly trigger an episode of atrial fibrillation - a dangerous heart rhythm disorder. Researchers came to this conclusion after surveying patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (Afib). Their data was published in the Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology.
According to the study results, cold beverages consistently caused arrhythmia episodes in some of the respondents. About half of them noted that after completely giving up icy drinks, the attacks stopped. For others, the severity of symptoms decreased if they let the drink warm up, avoided straws, or drank slowly.
The exact causes of this effect have not yet been established. According to cardiologist Grant Simons from Hackensack University Medical Center, a possible mechanism is the activation of the vagus nerve, which is involved in heart rhythm control. In sensitive individuals, rapid cooling of the oral mucosa can trigger a heart malfunction.
The authors emphasize: "Cold beverage syndrome" does not occur in everyone, but if you notice a connection between cold drinks and rhythm disturbances - you should consult a doctor. Sometimes a simple change in habits can play an important role in controlling the disease.
Earlier, scientists also found that beverage choices affect mental health. For example, carbonated drinks with sugar or artificial sweeteners increase the risk of depression, while fresh juices and coffee, on the contrary, can reduce it.
