The expert considers olive oil and fatty fish to be foods with immunomodulatory properties. The vitamins and antioxidants they contain can reduce inflammation in the body.
Inflammation is the body's natural response to tissue damage, infection, or other irritants. Acute inflammation helps the body deal with the threat, while chronic inflammation does not cause symptoms. However, the immune system remains activated, which disrupts the functioning of cells and tissues.
The doctor also recommended including foods with fiber - plant-based dietary fibers - in the diet. Vegetables, fruits, berries, and grains are rich in these. According to Dr. Macciochi, fiber improves gut health, which largely determines immunity.
Additionally, the expert advised reducing caloric intake and avoiding snacks between main meals.
