According to the statement by Russian specialist Nuria Dianova, executive director of the Research Center "Healthy Nutrition," fatty liver disease can develop in people with normal weight when they have an unbalanced diet with a predominance of fats over proteins and carbohydrates.

Fatty liver disease is a pathological condition characterized by excessive accumulation of fat in liver cells, which gradually leads to impaired function of this vital organ. The main cause of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is metabolic imbalance, often associated with obesity and diabetes.

"Externally, fatty liver disease is often associated with excess body weight. If a person notices that they are overweight or obese, this may be a signal of possible fatty liver disease. Even if weight is normal, but nutrition is unbalanced, the risk of developing the disease still exists. I have patients with normal body weight but with accelerated metabolism. They hardly gain weight, and therefore they often eat not the healthiest food, such as fast food or ultra-processed food, which contains a lot of fat. Such a diet can lead to fatty liver disease," noted the dietitian and hepatologist.

The specialist emphasizes that when creating a healthy diet, it is necessary to limit the consumption of added sugar, saturated fats, meat, and fatty dairy products. The expert recommends including plant-based products in the daily menu and diversifying protein sources by consuming both animal and plant protein.
