Japanese scientists have found a simple way to extend life and healthy years

Japanese scientists from the University of Tsukuba have found that regular cycling reduces the risk of death and decreases the need for long-term care in old age. A particularly pronounced positive effect is observed in people who do not drive cars. The results of this study were published in the scientific journal Transportation Research Part F: Traffic Psychology and Behaviour.
Researchers analyzed data on the health status and physical activity levels of Japanese residents collected from 2013 to 2023.
It was found that elderly participants who used bicycles more frequently at the beginning of the observation period were less likely to experience serious health problems in subsequent years. However, improvements were recorded not only in those who continued to cycle but also in those who started cycling later.
The most significant risk reduction was observed in elderly people without driver's licenses - according to scientists, bicycle rides played a particularly important compensatory role in their lives.
The study authors emphasize that cycling is not just a way to increase physical activity. Bicycle rides also contribute to improving psychological and emotional well-being and help maintain independence in old age. Scientists call for developing appropriate infrastructure and implementing social initiatives to make cycling safer and more attractive for older people.
