Men with thinning hair and shaved heads are at increased risk of developing skin cancer in summer due to refusing to wear hats and sunscreen.

Dermatologist Ross Perry, medical director of the British clinic Cosmedics, told Mail Online about this.

According to experts' estimates, about 17,100 cases of melanoma annually - nearly nine out of ten - are caused by cell damage from ultraviolet radiation from the sun or tanning beds. Melanoma remains the most aggressive form of skin cancer: it accounts for 80% of deaths despite making up only about 1% of all cases of malignant skin neoplasms.

Doctors expect that in 2025, the incidence of melanoma will grow again - by 20% compared to 2023.

According to Dr. Perry, for men, the second most common location for tumors is the head and neck. The doctor explained that men often forget to apply sunscreen to the scalp, believing that hair provides sufficient protection. However, as hair thins or falls out, the skin becomes vulnerable to sun exposure. This is especially dangerous because the skin on the head is subject to the same damage as exposed parts of the body, and in some cases - even more susceptible.

The medical expert reminded that basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, like melanoma, are often localized on the head and neck. At the same time, tumors of the scalp are more often diagnosed at later stages - including due to poor visibility and inattention to early signs.

Doctors advise men not to neglect sun protection: wear hats, use high SPF cream daily even in winter, and regularly check the scalp for changes.
