Lawyer Rena Kerimova revealed details of Navai's detention: He took the blame upon himself
Details have emerged about the condition of Russian rapper of Azerbaijani origin Navai (real name - Navai Bakirov), who was detained at the border in Kazakhstan with prohibited substances.
As reported by REN TV, the defense's position was shared by the performer's lawyer Rena Kerimova.
"Navai is doing very well. I visited him today. Everything is fine. He is a very sensible guy with a good sense of humor. He is basically prepared for anything but hopes for the best outcome," Kerimova said.
According to the lawyer, the artist has been reading books and writing poetry in the pretrial detention center. Kerimova also noted that the rapper himself objects to the public discussion of specific steps regarding his defense, fearing that it could harm his position as a foreign citizen.
Commenting on the circumstances of the detention, the lawyer clarified that at the time of the incident, the performer was not alone in the vehicle. "I can only say that he was not alone in the car. Anyone could have taken responsibility for it, but Navai decided it was better this way. My subjective opinion is that I also believe he is not guilty. But whether to admit guilt or not is Navai's own prerogative," the lawyer noted.
The defense attorney added that she assesses the prospects of Bakirov being released in the near future as very good. The process is proceeding in a routine manner. Due to the artist's arrest, organizers have begun canceling his scheduled performances.
Earlier, on October 14, Navai was detained at the "Kordai" checkpoint while attempting to enter Kazakhstan. Drugs were found in the musician's car.
The musician's mother, Ainur Bakirova, stated that the rapper's detention on drug charges is a provocation.
On October 15, Navai was arrested in Kazakhstan on drug smuggling charges. The musician faces up to 12 years in prison.
