Bad breath is not always associated with dental and gum diseases - this was stated by the president of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Sam Jethwa in a conversation with the Daily Mail. According to him, the problem is often caused by other factors, including dietary habits and digestive system diseases.

The dentist explained that bad breath most often occurs due to the multiplication of bacteria in the oral cavity. This is facilitated by dryness, especially if a person neglects hygiene and does not remove food residues in a timely manner through cleaning.

The doctor also noted that certain types of food increase bacterial activity.

"Dairy and protein products release amino acids that serve as a nutrient medium for microbes on the tongue. And acidic foods, such as citrus fruits or tomatoes, can stimulate their growth," the expert explained.

Dr. Jethwa added that "bad" breath can be associated with gastroesophageal reflux - a condition in which stomach contents enter the esophagus. If the breath smells of hydrogen sulfide or rotten eggs, this may indicate disorders in the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract.

The dentist advised to regularly brush teeth and tongue, use dental floss once or twice a day, and change the toothbrush every three months. If the problem persists despite following all hygiene recommendations, the specialist recommends consulting a general practitioner.
