American scientists from Yale University have found a link between elevated ozone levels in the air and an increased risk of heart attacks in young people. The study was published in the scientific journal GeoHealth.

The team analyzed data from 2322 patients aged 18 to 55 who had experienced heart attacks. The specialists studied air pollution levels, including ozone and fine particulate matter PM2.5, near the participants' places of residence.

The results showed that elevated ozone levels correlate with an increase in heart attacks 4-5 days after exposure. However, no connection between PM2.5 and heart attacks was found.

Researchers separately studied different types of heart attacks and found that ozone most strongly correlated with heart function disorders associated with reduced oxygen supply, for example due to low blood pressure.

Scientists also discovered that the connection between ozone and heart attacks may intensify during warm months. This is particularly concerning in the context of climate change, when air pollution levels and the frequency of extreme temperatures are increasing.

The team plans to continue studying the effects of air pollution on health to develop more effective prevention and protection measures.
