Dentist Veronika Melekhova told "Abzats" about an unexpected property of hard cheese. The product is capable of restoring enamel, creating a barrier against bacteria, and normalizing the acid-alkaline balance in the mouth, which directly reduces the risk of cavity development.

"Cheese stimulates saliva production. And saliva is a buffer system rich in various beneficial substances. They mineralize enamel and alkalize the environment, creating unfavorable conditions for cariogenic bacteria. Additionally, it contains lactobacilli and bifidobacteria that normalize the microflora of the oral cavity and the gastrointestinal tract. Furthermore, the high content of calcium and phosphorus contributes to strengthening teeth," Melekhova explained.

The protective mechanism is triggered the moment you take a bite. As the specialist explained, milk fat coats the teeth with a thin film that prevents acid produced by microbes from destroying tissue.

"The most valuable are aged hard cheese varieties, such as Parmesan or Cheddar. These types contain less lactose and more casein — a valuable protein. Acidic brined varieties, such as brynza or feta, are less effective due to a more acidic environment," the doctor added.

Melekhova specified that in the absence of milk protein intolerance, eating 20–30 g of cheese during one of the main meals is sufficient to obtain dental benefits.
