Middle East Peace Summit

Middle East Peace Summit

The international "Middle East Peace Summit" commenced in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh, dedicated to resolving the conflict in Gaza and establishing long-term peace in the region. The event, attended by leaders from over 20 countries, is co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and U.S. President Donald Trump. This summit marks a significant diplomatic breakthrough following two years of tension, including a ceasefire and the release of initial hostages.

The summit focuses on signing a multilateral agreement to halt hostilities in Gaza. As reported, Egypt has played a pivotal role as a mediator, facilitating negotiations that led to de-escalation. Participants, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, confirmed their attendance, underscoring a willingness for compromise. The summit also includes leaders from Azerbaijan, Turkey, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Jordan, Qatar, and other nations, as well as the UN Secretary-General and European Council President António Costa.

Trump will be awarded an Egyptian medal for his contributions to the peace process, recognizing his role in coordinating efforts. The summit also addresses plans for Gaza’s reconstruction, including European initiatives for rebuilding infrastructure, healthcare, and education. Russia’s absence was explained by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as incompatible with the summit’s format, while Iran declined participation, citing disagreements over the agenda, as per Tasnim news agency.

The participation of European leaders, such as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, demonstrates unity between the West and the Arab world in supporting Egypt’s initiative. A live broadcast of the summit, available on official platforms, allows the global public to follow the negotiations in real time.
