As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Diario Sport, former FC Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez stated that Lionel Messi's return fell through at the initiative of club president Joan Laporta.

According to the coach, the club's management had been in negotiations with the footballer's father and had also received permission from La Liga. However, at the last moment, the club's president halted the process. As Xavi noted, Laporta explained this by saying that Messi's return could provoke serious pressure and a "real war" surrounding the player.
