Starting August 2, natural gas from Azerbaijan arriving in Turkey will be transported to Syria through the border town of Kilis.

As Oxu.Az reports, thanks to supplies via this route, the volume of electricity produced in Syria will approximately double, which will be a significant step in restoring the country's energy infrastructure.

Recall that after the coup in Syria last December, the new government established contacts with Turkey. The Turkish government, in addition to developing relations in other areas, committed to restoring the energy infrastructure of the neighboring country.

Syria's new government has also restored diplomatic relations with Azerbaijan. On April 11, President Ilham Aliyev met with the interim president of the Syrian Arab Republic, Ahmed al-Sharaa, in Antalya. After this, Baku, together with Ankara, declared its readiness to assist in the restoration and development of Syria in the post-conflict period and did not spare their support.

On May 4, on the instructions of President Ilham Aliyev, an Azerbaijani delegation headed by Deputy Prime Minister Samir Sharifov visited Syria. The visit was aimed at exploring opportunities for cooperation in various fields, including economy, energy, culture, and education. On July 12, an expanded meeting between Ilham Aliyev and Ahmed al-Sharaa took place in Baku.

As a result of the agreements reached, on July 30, Turkey's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar announced that Turkey would cooperate with Azerbaijan and Qatar in exporting natural gas to Syria.

It is worth noting that the repair of the Kilis-Aleppo gas pipeline, which will have a capacity of 6 million cubic meters per day, was completed on May 21 this year. The annual capacity of the line can reach 2 billion cubic meters.

The supplied gas will be used to generate electricity at a gas power plant in Aleppo and will be converted into approximately 1200 megawatts of electricity. Thus, the amount of electricity produced in Syria will increase by about two times. Electricity supply in Syria, which currently lasts 3-4 hours a day, will increase to 10 hours thanks to this support.

Energy support is not limited to natural gas only. Turkey also plans to increase electricity exports to northern Syria. 280 megawatts of electricity will be directed to Syria via existing lines.

The previously used Birecik-Aleppo power transmission line will also be restored. With the completion of this line with a capacity of about 500 megawatts, it will be possible to export a total of 900 megawatts of electricity. This will provide electricity to about 1.6 million homes.
