The Caspian Sea is under serious threat - WARNING
Society 69

The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan has published an expanded report on the implementation of international obligations for the protection of the Caspian Sea marine ecosystem.

As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to baigenews.kz, Vice-Minister Mels Oshurbayev delivered the main speech at the meeting of the Mazhilis Committee on Ecology and Natural Resources Management.

Among the ministry's priorities is the creation of an effective monitoring system for the Caspian Sea condition. Work is underway to coordinate the environmental observation program, and a map of zones with increased environmental sensitivity in the Kazakhstani sector of the Caspian Sea is being developed. These steps are aimed at increasing the responsiveness to possible threats, such as oil spills.

The continuing shallowing of the sea causes serious concern. According to "Kazhydromet" forecasts, by 2050 the water level may drop to a critical level of minus 33 meters. In response to these challenges, the Kazakh Research Institute of the Caspian Sea was established in 2024. It will engage in scientific research, environmental monitoring, and the development of international cooperation. Currently, a government decision on funding for the institute's operations is expected.
