September 1, 2025: how much does it cost to prepare a child for school and what can you save on?

With each new school year, parents in Azerbaijan face an important and costly issue - preparing their child for school.
Prices are rising, the range of products is expanding, and the task of "buying everything needed without overpaying" becomes a real challenge.
Main expenses
According to calculations of families whose children are going to school this year, the average amount of expenses ranges from 350 to 700 manats. This amount includes several key categories.
Uniform and clothing.
School uniform is the most expensive item. A set consisting of pants or skirt, jacket, vest, and shirt costs on average from 150 to 250 manats. Shoes add another 80-120 manats. If the child grows quickly, it's reasonable to buy a uniform "one size larger".
Stationery.
Backpack, notebooks, pens, albums, and paints - from 100 to 150 manats. The biggest price gap is noticeable precisely in stationery items: the same notebook in different stores can cost twice as cheap or expensive.
Textbooks and additional materials.
Basic textbooks are provided in schools for free, but additional workbooks and problem books will cost 30-70 manats.
Electronics.
If a family decides to purchase a tablet or laptop for studying, the amount of expenses increases significantly. Budget options start from 400 manats.
Where can you save?
Savings are possible if you approach the preparations consciously.
Uniform. Buying at the beginning of August is usually more expensive than at the end of the month when stores offer discounts. In addition, some parents use tailoring services - custom tailoring is cheaper than branded ready-made uniforms.
Stationery. It's optimal to buy not in large supermarkets, but in wholesale outlets or at school fairs. Many items are more cost-effective to purchase in sets.
Backpack. It's not necessary to change it every year. A good orthopedic backpack lasts 2-3 years.
Learning materials. Some materials can be taken from older students or exchanged in parent chat groups.
Electronics. It's important to realistically assess the necessity of the purchase. Sometimes a shared home computer or tablet is sufficient.
Conclusion
By September 1, 2025, parents in Azerbaijan spend an amount comparable to a family's monthly budget on preparing a child for school. However, up to a third of expenses can be reduced by avoiding spontaneous purchases, comparing prices, and using the experience of other parents.
