In the US, Lay's chips are being recalled due to the presence of undeclared milk ingredients on the label. According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the highest risk level - "Class I" has been declared. This category means that the product can cause life-threatening allergic reactions.
In response to Oxu.az's inquiry about the recall of certain batches of Lay's potato chips in the US due to health risk claims, the Food Safety Agency of Azerbaijan (FSAA) reported that these batches of products were not imported into our country.
"Such information distributed by foreign media and relevant organizations is regularly analyzed by FSAA specialists, and necessary measures are taken to ensure food safety," the information states.
Allergist Gunel Mamedova, responding to questions about possible consequences for people with lactose intolerance or deficiency when consuming products containing milk components, said that the absence of enzymes that break down these components in such people's bodies causes an allergic reaction.
She said that in this case, the primary symptoms are diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea:
"If a person is allergic to milk components, sensitivity develops in the body upon first consumption, and allergy occurs with subsequent intake. When first symptoms appear, a person must see a doctor. In such cases, an allergist is not the first option. A gastroenterologist will be more helpful. Depending on the person's condition, outpatient or inpatient care should be provided. Gastrointestinal tract lavage and anti-emetic medications are necessary."
The doctor said that this is registered as a food allergy and in severe cases can be accompanied by rash and poisoning.
Note that attempts to contact the company organizing Lay's sales in Azerbaijan regarding this issue were unsuccessful.
