A complex of measures aimed at separating lines has started in the Baku Metro, directed at regulating passenger flow, optimizing train intervals, and improving overall service quality.

This was reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Baku Metro CJSC.

Currently, three lines are functioning in the metro: red, green, and purple. Of these, only the purple line operates in a completely independent mode. The red and green lines intersect at the "28 May" station and use common infrastructure. As a result, trains running on the red and green lines can arrive at the platform only alternately – at best with a 4-minute interval. On the jointly used section, the interval is reduced to 2 minutes. This situation leads to increased passenger congestion on platforms and increased waiting times, especially at stations operating with a 4-minute interval.

Under existing conditions, the fundamental and long-term solution to the problem is the complete separation of the green and red lines and the transition of each to an independent mode of operation.

For this purpose, construction of the "Darnagul" electric depot has begun as a priority. This depot will provide independent technical maintenance for the green line, its complete separation from other lines, and overnight train parking.

After the completion of the first stage of depot construction, the next key stage will begin – the construction of a new tunnel that will connect the "Jafar Jabbarli" and "Nizami" stations. The existing tunnel, which has been functioning since 1976, will be modified, and an additional 200-meter tunnel will directly connect the "Nizami" station with the "Jafar Jabbarli" station. This will allow the green line to operate independently.

The construction of the connecting tunnel will be carried out in difficult geological conditions, and according to preliminary estimates by local and international engineers, the work will last approximately 10-11 months. All technical resources will be mobilized for safe, high-quality, and maximum rapid completion of the work.

In addition, as part of the project, the construction of an additional passage connecting the "28 May" and "Jafar Jabbarli" stations is planned in parallel for passenger convenience.

The start of construction of the new tunnel, which is the main stage of the line separation project, is scheduled for the end of 2025. It is from this moment that certain changes will occur in passenger travel. During the construction period, the "Nizami" station will become a temporary terminal stop on the green line, and therefore:

• Passengers arriving from the "Darnagul" side will have to exit at the "Nizami" station and use alternative public transport to transfer to the red line;

• Passengers arriving from the "Azi Aslanov" side will have to exit at the "28 May" station and similarly use alternative public transport to transfer to the green line.

Train traffic on the Icheri Sheher–28 May–Azi Aslanov line will continue in the same mode, and no restrictions are expected in this direction. On the contrary, further reduction of intervals and provision of more stable service on this route is planned.

Baku Metro and the relevant state structures will work together to ensure that passengers go through this period with minimal inconvenience. Currently, preparatory work is being carried out to organize express bus routes, about which the public will be informed in a timely manner.

Of course, this transition period may cause certain inconveniences for passengers. However, it should be taken into account that this is a necessary stage for the transition to faster, more frequent, and more comfortable metro lines in the future.

As a result of the work being carried out, passenger congestion on platforms will decrease and waiting times will be reduced. As is known, today at the "28 May" station, boarding trains going both in the direction of "Icheri Sheher" and "Darnagul" is carried out alternately on the same platform. This leads to problems such as mutual interference of passenger flows, crowding, and disorder on the platform.

With the separation of lines, this chaotic situation will be eliminated, and thus, from the "28 May" station, it will only be possible to board trains going in the direction of "Icheri Sheher" and "Azi Aslanov," and from the "Jafar Jabbarli" station – only trains going in the direction of "Darnagul" and "Khatai."

If a passenger's final destination is not on the line where they are currently located, they will be able to easily continue their journey by transferring between the "28 May" and "Jafar Jabbarli" stations. This will make the process of boarding trains more convenient and dynamic, and waiting on the platform more organized and safe.

In addition, thanks to the separation of lines, the interval between trains will gradually decrease. At the same time, these measures will increase the annual capacity of the metro to 16 million passengers,
