Listed diseases whose treatment will be helped by the Nobel laureates' discovery

Nobel laureates Mary E. Brankow, Fred Ramsdell from the USA and Shimon Sakaguchi from Japan have made an important breakthrough in medicine that could help treat multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes in the future, reports NZZ.

Autoimmune diseases develop when the body's cells mistakenly attack its own tissues. The scientists have managed to develop a mechanism that prevents such disruptions from the immune system, which opens the way to stopping the progression of severe diseases.

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Mary E. Brankow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi for their research on peripheral immune tolerance - a system that protects the body from excessive immune system reactions to its own cells. Their discovery will also help in the treatment of oncological diseases.
