ChatGPT reached 1 billion monthly active users faster than any other application in history
OpenAI's ChatGPT app has surpassed the 1 billion monthly active users mark worldwide, becoming the fastest-growing app to ever reach this milestone, according to estimates by analytics firm Sensor Tower.
This was reported by ixbt.com.
The app surpassed the 1 billion monthly active users mark approximately three years after launch, outpacing the growth rates of apps such as Google Maps, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.
The company stated that U.S. ChatGPT users who installed Anthropic's Claude app in the first quarter of 2026 spent 5% less time on ChatGPT one month after installation compared to the average over the previous eight months.
On Monday, Anthropic confidentially filed for an initial public offering (IPO) in the U.S., and Reuters reported that OpenAI is also preparing to file for an IPO in the coming weeks.
According to Sensor Tower, as of the current second quarter, the Claude app had 56 million monthly active users worldwide, and its monthly active user growth of approximately 640% year-over-year significantly outpaced ChatGPT's growth (62%).
