Pale skin, especially when combined with bluish lips, brittle nails, hair loss, and unusual taste preferences, may indicate iron deficiency in the body. This was reported by therapist and occupational pathologist Svetlana Burnatskaya.

As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to "Gazeta.Ru," the specialist emphasized that paleness itself is not a definitive diagnostic sign and should be evaluated in combination with other symptoms - weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness, and rapid heartbeat. If such complaints persist for more than two weeks, the doctor recommends seeking medical help and getting a complete blood count with ferritin level determination.

According to Burnatskaya, concerning signs include constant fatigue, decreased concentration, angular cheilitis (cracks at the corners of the mouth), perverted taste preferences - the desire to eat chalk, ice, or soil (a phenomenon known as "pica"), as well as shortness of breath with mild physical exertion, tachycardia, dry skin and hair. Special attention should be paid to such symptoms in women with heavy menstruation and in people with chronic gastrointestinal diseases.

The doctor also noted that chronic stress, lack of sleep, and a high-paced lifestyle negatively affect iron absorption. Under the influence of cortisol, the permeability of the gastric and duodenal mucosa is disrupted, and the production of hydrochloric acid, which is necessary for iron absorption by the body, is reduced.

With a mild degree of deficiency, not accompanied by pronounced anemia, it is possible to correct the condition through nutrition. Foods high in iron include beef liver, tongue, beef, oysters, lentils, buckwheat, pumpkin seeds, and sesame seeds. Svetlana Burnatskaya emphasized that prophylactic use of iron-containing preparations without laboratory confirmation of deficiency is not recommended, as excess iron is toxic. In the autumn-winter period, the doctor advises undergoing screening - getting a complete blood count and checking ferritin levels.
